Wedding Outfit Shopping

Did I mention our eldest son is getting married this summer? In a castle no less! I have no idea what the etiquette is for “Mother of the Groom” or what aesthetic his wife to be has envisioned. To remedy my lack, his fiancée & her mum arranged to meet me for a shopping day in the nearest big city. I’m writing this sat on the train home without a carrier bag in sight. Despite not buying anything I have learnt the following:-

– I’m a size smaller than than I thought

– hats & fascinators are a pain in both the head & kabeezer

– etiquette demands I wear heels & a frock or suit

– walking in heels is now above my pay grade

– full sleeves make my embonpoint look even bigger

– my back is going to punish me tomorrow & over the wedding weekend

– Don’t eat at a famous chef’s franchise again

On the fragrance front we stood in front of the Chanel Exclusifs for a lengthy spell whilst the SA’s chatted & determinedly ignored us. In the end I asked loudly but politely for a blotter. No eye contact as he handed me a square card then resumed his chatting. I sprayed Comete on the card myself! I now know where not to buy my Chanel’s from.

As to Comete on the blotter, aldehydes morphing into a warmer No5 style floral, heavy on the ylang, a light jigger of almond, playdoh variety & finishes on a vanilla baby powder. The opening is very Chanel. The mid & base are not. Here it is inviting & at this stage Comete has a big grin on its face. Not quite open armed for a hug but certainly come hither. Need to try again on skin.

Have you tried Comete?

Comete doesn’t sound like my type – nor do those SAs! Sometimes you have to kiss several frogs (and frocks) before finding the right one… but I’m sure you will find the perfect outfit for the momentous occasion!

I haven’t tried Comete, Alityke. Based on your description, not something I would like. Being the mother of the groom is a daunting position, but I’m sure you will make it though, and probably smelling the best. Congratulations to you, your son and your entire family.

Dying to know who the franchise is..

So sorry to hear of the rude SA’s. I love Comete. It opens with cherry blossom, but it’s mainly iris, lots of heliotrope, some citrus, aldehydes and musk. But it is quite complex. It’s not a simple powdery scent at all. It has a good development and is long lasting on my skin.

Being the mother of the groom is tough. Just be glad you don’t need a whole wardrobe of clothes! Hindu weddings have so many events, I needed 4 different outfits for my son’s wedding. Eeek! Thank goodness my DIL and her mom brought me a sari to wear for the wedding. It was beautiful and very comfy AND you wear saris with flat shoes. I was able to find the other 3 dresses at Nordstrom and a discount site.

I say you should wear flat shoes and be comfy. Flat shoes are IN right now and there are many beautiful flats to choose from in most stores. I can only wear flat shoes since I walk with a cane and have some balance issues so I made sure my feet were comfy.

I’ve ordered one of the dresses I tried in a petite, a similar one in more flattering colours, a blue silk & chiffon overlay, a pink & orange number & a neutral linen 3 piece suit. I want to change into something more comfy for the evening do!

  6. Alityke,
I’m so sorry that etiquette has bullied you out off your comfort zone. It’s all so stupid and meaningless.
A hint. Take a pair of comfy shoes and slip into them when you’re not on display or being photographed. Take a moment to talk to the photographer and ask him to make sure your comfies aren’t in any shots.

Good news is that you now have a couple of very nice looks for all other events for the next few years till fashion or your size changes.

I’m loving Comete and can see a bottle in my future.

Bless you Portia. My Jeans, hoodie & a T really wouldn’t cut the mustard would it?
Future DiL has asked for “fanciest” clothes for the dress code. My choice if fanciest would be an All Saints studded dress & leather jacket, worn with clumpy boots & a cockring belt 😈 not wedding friendly unless it’s a Goth do at Whitby Abbey
